Monopolistic Competition and Product Differentiation

چکیده
b. The industry for individual-serving juice boxes is dominated by a few very large firms (for example, Minute Maid, Welch’s, and Kool Aid), and there are significant barriers to entry, in part because of the large costs (for example, advertising) involved in gaining any market share of the national market. Products are, however, differentiated—if perhaps only in the minds of consumers. Because of the small number of competitors, the industry is closer to oligopoly.

The Theory of Monopolistic Competition, Marketing’s Intellectual History, and the Product Differentiation Versus Market Segmentation Controversy
Edward Chamberlin’s theory of monopolistic competition influenced greatly the development of marketing theory and thought in the 1930s to the 1960s. Indeed, marketers held the theory in such high regard that the American Marketing Association awarded Chamberlin the Paul D. Converse Award in 1953, which at the time was the AMA’s highest honor. However, the contemporary marketing literature virtu...
متن کاملPricing, product diversity, and search costs: a Bertrand-Chamberlin-Diamond model
We study price competition in the presence of search costs and product differentiation. The limit cases of the model are the ‘‘Bertrand Paradox,’’ the ‘‘Diamond Paradox,’’ and Chamberlinian monopolistic competition. Market prices rise with search costs and decrease with the number of firms. Prices may initially fall with the degree of product differentiation because more diversity leads to more...
متن کاملProduct Differentiation and Market Power in the California Gasoline Market
This paper applies a model of market power measurement under product differentiation to the case of the gasoline market in California, using data for the period 1983-1989. Our results show that there is a considerable degree of product differentiation among major brands. This allows firms to exercise local market power over their own specific products, but there are also signals of an important...
متن کاملRevisiting the Revisited: An Alternative Test of the Monopolistic Competition Model of International Trade
This paper proposes an alternative test of the monopolistic competition model of international trade that has an implication for the relationship between the volume of trade and similarity among trading countries in the size of the economy. In the existing literature the model’s implication has been tested for aggregate trade, which includes the sectors that are not characterized by product dif...
متن کاملNonlinear Pricing and Multimarket Duopolists
This paper studies competition in price-quality menus within the context of a horizontally differentiated duopoly, where each firm also operates in a local, monopolistic market. It is assumed that the consumer’s unobservable valuation for quality is determined by the nature of his preferences over brand product characteristics. I show that if competition between the two firms is sufficiently fi...
